Remote Control K9
One of the first examples of remote control in the world of popular culture was the RC dog K9. K9 was a featured performer in the long running BBC Sci-fi show, Doctor Who.
One of the most famous robots in popular culture is the famous dog from the BBC television series named K9. The little artificial pet began as a cameo in one episode, but was so popular that they brought the little guy back and he became a regular fixture on the show. In fact, K9 went through at least four different versions. His Wikipedia article is longer than the one of the Doctor Who show itself. Now, it is possible to own your very own remote control K9.
There are several remote control dogs based on the K9 character. They very much resemble the television star with the exception of the ability to talk intelligently. It is interesting to note that when the idea was first conceived for the show, they considered putting a small actor inside a dog costume. This idea was scrapped and they ended up using a very rudimentary remote control dog. So, it is possible today to purchase a remote control K9 that is technologically superior to the one from television.
The models available seem to follow the basic design of the original. There has not been much interest in dogs or animals generally in the remote control hobby, so K9 is a bit unique. Most models maintain the Doctor Who connection even up to including Doctor Who action figures with the kits. The flashing eyes and wagging tail of the original are copied very accurately. Although completely true to the idea of the show K9, this remote control model is much more a 'toy" than the average RC model.
One advantage of this more "toy" application is that the prices tend to be more on that level than what you find for serious RC models. The RC model hobby has become quite sophisticated in recent years, and prices have reflected that trend. It is refreshing to be able to price a RC model that does not require a bank loan to get the very best available.
It shows the progress of Radio Controlled models that you can buy your child a cute little robotic looking dog that is technically superior to the one it is based on from the famous Television show. While most RC models are aiming for realism, speed, ability to maneuver, the remote control K9 just wants to be cute and amusing.
