RC Snow Plow
There must be an awful lot of people out there skeptical of using RC trucks for snow removal because the internet is full of videos showing one type or other of RC snow plow in action.
If you take a look at some of the videos turning up on such sites as MySpace showing how their own particular RC snow plow is working, you will see that there are really two different ideas here. Idea number one says, "Isn't it fun to watch my RC truck mounted with a remote control plow barreling through the snow on a winter day?" Idea number two, more practical, says, "Hmm, maybe my RC truck mounted with a remote control plow can actually clear the sidewalk, so I can stay warm!"
There is one major problem with putting a RC snow plow on your monster truck and putting it to work. RC control vehicles are full of electric components and electricity and water do not mix. This is certainly not an insurmountable problem. Remember, there are RC boats out there. They obviously have addressed the issue of waterproofing the electrical components. It is up to you to make sure that your RC vehicle is properly waterproofed as well. The boat model makers are anticipating water, of course, but the land vehicle model makers are not thinking along those lines.
It is really not that hard to waterproof your vehicle's components, but if you neglect to do it, that first time watching your new RC snow plow work will most likely be your last. Your friends at the RC hobby shop as well as some good "how to" websites can give you all the pointers that you need.
There is even a prototype RC snow plow, or rather a snow eater that sucks up snow and compacts it into little ice blocks that are deposited behind it as it moves along. This is mentioned only to suggest that remote control snow removal, a sort of fun thing now, might very well be headed in the future into an innovative industry. There are already some very practical remote control lawn mowers out there. There is no telling where remote control snow removal might end up.
In the meantime, if you manage to rig up, and waterproof, your own RC snow plow truck, be sure to take some videos and get them on the internet. You will not only be providing some visual proof of your own genius, but will also be providing some good laughs for the viewers. It is hard to say what is so funny about a model truck barreling through the snow like a snow plow gone crazy, but if you can watch some of the videos and not smile, at least, you are a cold, cold person.
