Firefly Micro Indoor RC Helicopter

The great versatility of the Remote Control hobby world can be easily seen when you jump from a 1/6 scale monster to something you can hold in the palm of your hand. The Firefly Micro Indoor RC helicopter represents the miniature side of the hobby.

Although most people think of big off the road trucks plowing through their backyards or lightening fast cars racing around an oval track, the remote control hobby has its small side, too. In the RC world, bigger is not always better or more fun. One good example of this is the world of indoor RC models. The top of this line might well be the Firefly Micro Indoor RC helicopter.

This amazing little model measures a mere 6.5 inches long and has a rotor diameter of only 6.375 inches. It weighs a mere 28 grams, which is about nine tenths of an ounce. It is designed, as its name suggests, to be used indoors. The Firefly is popular in homes and offices and many hobbyists use them for bad weather or winter recreation. Although they are considered a gadget or toy, the performance and realism level of the Firefly is still remarkable.

The Firefly currently on the market is a second generation model that has some major improvements in performance and reliability over its predecessor. The Firefly needs a 9 volt battery for the transmitter and 6 "C" batteries for the field charger. An optional AC adapter is available and makes the 6 batteries unnecessary. Since the Firefly is designed for indoor use, this is a sensible option, but must be purchased separately. The two channel controller allows forward movement, up and down, and left and right. The Firefly, like a true helicopter can even hover.

The new model comes in two colors, red or black, and is not recommended for use by children under the age of 10 years. The list price has recently been lowered from $89.95 to $69.95, which makes it a true bargain when you consider the hours of fun and excitement it is capable of providing for the whole family. There are other options available such as a spare parts kit. These may be purchased separately and include spare rotors. Since the rotor is the most susceptible part to damage, the spare rotor kit is recommended.

Size is not everything, goes the old saying, and this is especially true in the RC hobby field. Miniature models add an extra dimension to the hobby and the indoor models such as the Firefly helicopter add a new location for fun. Even if your interest is in a big lumbering RC tank or blazing nitro RC race car, the Firefly will be a fun break for those times when you are trapped indoors, but still can not resist remote control.
